Shot-Gun Wedding Of The Century

Minister of National Development Khaw Boon Wan used an interesting analogy to justify the horrendous population figure of 6.9 million crammed into our tiny island. He likened it to planning a wedding dinner, presumably not the noisy void deck type.

"You're organising a wedding banquet and you invited 1,000 people but your guests did not RSVP, so you don't know how many are coming," he said. "Will it be 700, 800, 900 or a thousand? What do you think?" asked Khaw, adopting the infuriating query style of Teo Chee Hean. "And if 700 or 800 turn up, yes, it costs you some money, there's some wastage, but you avoid embarrassment and chaos. On the other hand, if you want to save money, you just provide for 700, cross your fingers, but if 800 turn up, then there will be under-catering."

There's only one problem in this scenario. He's talking about a shot-gun wedding. And the guests are people we don't know, don't care to know, utter strangers showing up at the door from China, North India, Philippines, Burma, Eastern Europe, and the odd Nigerian scamster. Aliens who received the invite not from true blue Singaporeans, but some URA planner turned Benedict Arnold, selling out our country for some pieces of silver.

He's at his $8 heart bypass trick again, conveniently forgetting to tell us how much he paid out in insurance premiums before he went under the knife. Or the large discount he enjoys courtesy of his Civil Service Card entitlement. Everybody else pays cash.

Urging Singaporeans to trust the Government, he said, "Please, don't worry". And then proceeded to paint a rosy future where there could be cars without drivers on Singapore roads by 2030 to ease traffic congestion. He obviously is ignorant of the simple fact that congestion is caused when too many cars are put on too few roads, with or without drivers. And oh, he hopes that people will no longer be attached to the idea of owning a car, and certificates of entitlement will thus not be "a headache to everybody." With such wackos as wedding planners, no wonder it's an uphill task to persuade Singaporeans to exchange marriage vows.

Worst case scenario

Like all Ponzi schemes, the late comers (new citizens), if they are stupid enough to buy into this fairy tale will be left holding the baby.

  2. Khaw has learnt from his predecessor in coming up with glossy brochure to sell his megalopolis. This time, everything will be so well planned and quality of life so good, that any Tiong, Dick and Harry should be so proud to have a 3 days void-deck wedding, with no worries about overshooting the budget with uninvited strangers!

Did he say - Don't worry be happy? You bet I am. What can I say, he literally pull out another 7000 hectares of free land from his magic hat when it comes to accommodating foreigners, even at the point of sacrificing golf lands, but he could do so for the old and elderlies when he needed to park them in cheap JB! So much for his generosity!!

Dont worry about RSVP for your wedding on 2016.
In fact, you can send out national invite and nobody will turn up even if you have abalone and sharks fin.

  15. SINGAPORE: National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan has stressed that the projected 6.9 million population by 2030 is the "worst case scenario".

I am confused. He is inviting 6.9 million to our shores, "the worst case", according to him. He is preparing a huge banguet, his analogy, for all of them. If all turn up, isn't it his best case scenario, because he has planned and prepared for this many? If less than 6.9 million turn up, then it becomes a worst case scenario, right? He is putting wool over our eyes by calling this the "worst case scenario", to assuage public sentiment. Very reminiscent of his $8 heart surgery.

Say it, Mr Khaw....6.9 million is the Best Case Scenario, for you, that is. But to us, it is, truly, the worst case scenario. Don't be so disingenuous (?), deceptive (?), duplicititous (?), devious (?), deceitful (?), because it exposes your dishonesty in falsely pandering to the hopes of the public by not calling a spade a spade.

When the 2Yr inflation breakeven also breaks 2.5%, it will be game over for all the property markets the world over. But even before then, the trend is forcing the printing press to stop, not even a 10m population can help your asses, and no money laundering from China, Indonesia or Malaysia will stop the massive losses to be taken by the bankers. 24. One correction:
Ministers in Singapore are on the same medical benefits scheme - the Medisave-cum-Subsidised Outpatient (MSO) scheme – like most civil servants. The medical benefits comprise a 1% CPF contribution to their Medisave accounts capped at $1,190 per year (out of which the Minister should buy Medisave approved insurance to provide for his own hospital care), a co-payment subsidy for outpatient treatment capped at $350 annually, and 50% of dental costs incurred up to a maximum subsidy of $70 per year.

That is the total medical benefits. There are no extra benefits for them or their spouse/ children (below age 18 years). Their parents do not have medical benefits.

Myth about civil servants getting large discounts for medical expenses should not be perpetuated.

    3. This troll is very clever. Of course Ministers have the same civil service card as other civil servants. My uncle is a junior civil servant, and the card entitles him and his wife to free consultation except for specialist treatment. All prescribed medication, except for supplements like vitamins, are free of charge. If he's hospitalised, he is entitled to free Class B2 (?), and can request to be attended to by a registrar instead of any medical officer. Recently he had an eye operation, and it was completely FOC. For the ordinary person, who can't even use his medisave for monthly check-ups, all these extras are mouth watering.

  31. Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean said Hong Kong's population density is about 22,700 per square kilometre (sq km), while Singapore's is about 11,000 per sq km. Even with a 6.9 million population, Singapore's population density will be around 13,700 per sq km.

Back in May 2012: "Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities director Malone-Lee Lai Choo felt that there is room to increase built-up land to 70 per cent and for the population to grow to 6.5 million.... Currently, Singapore's built up land has a net density of 12,400 persons per square km. Net density in Hong Kong, she noted, is 26,000 persons per sq km."

Back in May 2012: There are still the islands of Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong to fall back on - this is attributable to Liu Thai Ker, former CEO of HDB, former CEO & Chief Planner of the URA, Chairman of Advisory Board Centre for Liveable Cities, who advised Singaporeans to "break the psychological barrier and face issues of higher density".

How disingenuous of DPM Teo when he quoted his figures on "population density". Did he say "net"? It appears his thinking has converged with those expressed by Malone-Lee Lai Choo and Liu Thai Ker. They will be building smaller and higher flats to squeeze more people into our limited land area, ala Hong Kong's pigeon holes in the sky. They conveniently forget that Hong Kong has a much larger land area where there is room to breathe. This is the REAL population density per sq km - Singapore 7546 and Hong Kong 6482 in July 2012 (Wikipedia). By 2030 we will be 30% higher. We already passed Hong Kong for 3rd spot after Macau and Monaco long time ago.

Khaw: "Don’t worry we'll create more land to accommodate 7m population". "..you can have a larger population and yet have a better quality of life". "So the key is planning and infrastructure and with time, we can achieve both, so please don’t worry.”

Do you believe this $8 heart surgery magician? While at it, please create more affordable water, food , energy....and babies. It's so wonderful having leaders who can overnight improve their 20/20 visions and see 17 light years into the future, as if the sun will always shine, but can't solve the current high cost of living, inflation, high property prices, overcrowding, healthcare costs, transportation woes, etc - all created by them. So don't worry? It's not the psychological barrier of the people that will break, but the people themselves.

    1. They have a wicked mindset. Since Hong Kong has mountains of 1000+ metres, I propose we calculate population density based on total surface area. A ball park estimate of Hong Kong's surface area would be 2000km2 on the conservative side. Singapore is basically flat, so the surface area will be the same 700km2. Now HK pop density will be 3000/km2 versus SG 7500/km2.
