On Better Communications

Even if you were not caught in the total chaos on the North-South Line of December 2011, you cannot escape being riled by the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT)'s crude commercial capitalisation on the commuters' misery.

The same penchant for profit over empathy reared its ugly head again with the Singapore Airlines (SIA) social media broadcast posted shortly after MH17 was shot down over Ukraine.

The outrage is not just about their heartless attitude towards the loss of 298 innocent lives. It has also to do with their crass attempt to lie about using the same flight path over a war zone.

Even the state sponsored mouth piece confirmed that, in the last 7 days before the tragedy of 17 July, SIA flew over Donetsky 75 times, more than Malaysia Airlines (48 times), topped only by Aeroflot (86 times).

Flightradar24.com records show that SQ 351 was 25km away from MH17 at the time of the incident. The Buk-M1 surface-to-air missile that brought down MH17 is guided by its TELAR vehicle's monopulse type radar which can track aircraft flying between 15 m and 22 km (50 to 72,000 ft) altitudes.

The real tragedy is that the same breed of government appointed elites are installed at upper echelons of SMRT and SIA. The same get-out-of-my-elite-uncaring-face types behind the Population White Paper and Medishield Life. Don't be surprised that these cads will be first to pop the champagne bottle if a SIA plane was hit instead, and provide useful distraction from the many instances of misgovernance. The SIA spokesman said, "We recognise that the information could have been better communicated," a line that has been used once too often.

  1. This is the kind of deception the PAP government is very apt on creating to fool the general public. Luckily, for the internet community, such lies are easily exposed as information is readily available.

  2. “PM: Be simple, direct in govt communications"

What can be simpler and more direct than SIA's attempt to lie and to capitalise on a tragedy to promote it's own interests. Isn't this so typical of the ruling Regime?

  3. Today's Shit Times CPF advert raise another Q&A to "What happens if we die early?" with the answer that "All your REMAINING CPF savings will be distributed to your loved ones upon your death."

The key word is "REMAINING". Nothing is ever mentioned of the portion of your CPF savings already siphoned away to pay for those in who "die late". Why do they still want to fool the people all the time with these type of dirty advertisement tactics ?

And how come our PAP Govt never even bother to ask for my personal opinion whether I am sure I can live beyond 85 or die before 65 before they implemented the CPF Life ?

    1. "Your CPF is safe"!

haha, temasek announced 1 year return 1.5% vs last year S&P went up over 16%. The year before it announced 1 year return 8.8% vs S&P 11%. But its not the under-performance vs a simple global index that shocks, it is the way they flexibly dropped their returns, just when people are clamoring for higher CPF interest rates. You want more interest on CPF? But Temasek is making only 1.5% wat, how to give you more leh!! These highly goal-seeked figures can only come from honest, whiter-than-white MIW!

    2. Actually this is another deception by them. If Temasek long-term return is 16%, who cares about the year-to-year roller coaster? Just give us the long-term rate for our CPF!

    3. this year they changed their reporting again (very flexible), they introduced the Total return to shareholders (TRS) which is 8.86%, together with the 1yr rolling, and a 10yr rolling returns, pick your dud number. Not sure how the 8.86% relate to the other previous returns thrown about, even prof balding stopped commenting. truly good good deception to prevent people from tracking them and poking holes. We have madam copperfield at the bridge of thl.

  4. SIA statement was not wrong, since the crash, SIA are not using the affected air space. Leave it to technocrat to come up with excuses instead of good solid preventive measure in the first place is what is destroying Singapore.

    1. It says "not using" the airspace. It should say "no longer using" instead. The first statement is very deceptive.

  5. When SQ says it was not using the route, what they didn't say was it was "no longer " flying through the airspace " since the accident happened" lah... .

  6. Playing around with present tense is all they get for paying hundreds of millions in marketing expenses? You can parade SIA girls naked along Oxford Street or Manhattan, but this type of "trickery" with heartless profit-driving at the expense of safety bordering on lunacy is irresponsible. In a normally functioning, self-correcting system, someone high up must take responsibility and quit or be sacked. In Singapore and Malaysia, well..... its a 'free market' system a-la dictatorship, "talent aka elites, must be protected" against the "bigots and xenophobics" calling for basic accountability. Suck it up, sheeple, you are living in lala land...

  8. SIA will continue to fly over Ukraine if the ST did not point out that "they have been flying in the last 7 days before the tragedy of 17 July, SIA flew over Donetsky 75 times," They will do so until something tragic happen to one of their planes. When that happens the company will swear that they put passenger safety as their top priority and blah blah blah. And like "we have the safety of the passengers utmost in our mind." SQ 351 was 25km away from MH17 at the time of the incident. Too close for comfort. And they are flying at an altitude just close to the safety limit. The authorities in US and Europe have banned their national airlines from flying over Ukraine since April 2014. Why is SIA so gungho. Simple answer : because they want to cut cost and make more money, higher profit. When things go smoothly everyone is happy - make more money etc. All the hue and cry about passenger safety when a tragedy strikes means nothing. They should ensure a bigger margin of safety like the Western Airlines before any fatal accident happen. They should not be paying lip service. Just do it.
The same song and dance for SMRT, SBS Transit, whenever an accident occur.

  9. shanghai husi, closed on sunday, should learn from SIA. it can now say, hand on heart:
We are not supplying McDonald's, KFC, with rotten meat....

on another note, is SIA, like MAS, now flying over Syria, which is also in the throes of a civil war?
