Speeches From Hell

You don't have to be the mother of someone detained without trial to walk away from the television set every time his image comes on. It's scary enough to see a horrible person speaking from the underworld, so the guys who wrote the subtitles had to tone down the hellfire and brimstone rhetoric to the bare minimum. Self censorship is so defeatist, the unexpurgated truth is more liberating:

"It is necessary to try and put some safeguards into the way in which people use their votes to bargain, to coerce, to push, to jostle and get what they want without running the risk of losing the services of the government, because one day, by mistake, they will lose the services of the government... You unscramble Singapore, well, you'll never put Humpty Dumpty together again."

"I ignore polling as a method of government. I think that shows a certain weakness of mind - an inability to chart a course whichever way the wind blows, whichever way the media encourages the people to go, you follow. If you can't force or are unwilling to force your people to follow you, with or without threats, you are not a leader."

"Mine is a very matter-of-fact approach to the problem. If you can select a population and they're educated and they're properly brought up, then you don't have to use too much of the stick because they would already have been trained. It's like with dogs. You train it in a proper way from small. It will know that it's got to leave, go outside to pee and to defecate. No, we are not that kind of society. We had to train adult dogs who even today deliberately urinate in the lifts."

"You know, the cure for all this talk is really a good dose of incompetent government. You get that alternative and you'll never put Singapore together again: Humpty Dumpty cannot be put together again... and your asset values will be in peril, your security will be at risk and our women will become maids in other people's countries, foreign workers."

"Supposing Catherine Lim was writing about me and not the prime minister...She would not dare, right? Because my posture, my response has been such that nobody doubts that if you take me on, I will put on knuckle-dusters and catch you in a cul de sac...Anybody who decides to take me on needs to put on knuckle dusters. If you think you can hurt me more than I can hurt you, try. There is no other way you can govern a Chinese society."

"Singaporeans, if I can chose an analogy, we are the hard disk of a computer, the foreign talent are the megabytes you add to your storage capacity. So your computer never hangs because you got enormous storage capacity."

"The final verdict will not be in the obituaries. The final verdict will be when the PhD students dig out the archives, read my old papers, assess what my enemies have said, sift the evidence and seek the truth."

The more megabytes of data one stores in the memory, the less storage capacity one is left with (and soon runs out of memory). Even if you don't run out of storage capacity, the memory gets more clogged up and slows the computer down. Somehow people don;t get it. When you are groomed your whole life to think you are the best, why bother searching for the truth anymore? Just assume you know better than the rest and rule them the way you see fit. Or more likely for the senior civil servants, just follow the flow-chart to collect the bonus and promotion.

    1. Just like junior, who you said has a hard disk - in his head. But computers are machines, they have no heart. How do you "care for residents' needs" (Ng Eng Hen) if you have no heart? Is that why the people's welfare take second stage to GDP growth?

That also explain why horrible Pinky and horrible fart without remorse and guilt , use gerrymandering, use public monies to buy supporter's votes, continue to bully sinkies, give nonsense , and do whatever they like because they "ignore polling as a method of government.".

    3. This reminds me of the characters in the Wizard of Oz. The scarecrow had no brains, tin man had no heart, lion was a coward, and the wizard was a liar. Do you know, for all your bluster, doesn't it appear that you were all four roled into one? I shudder to think that your heir is the same, who is even afraid of his own shadow. Please, HAVE A HEART. And a real brain, not a hard disk that cannot think.

  3. Only Singaporeans can exorcise the horrible spirit by voting wisely.
    Why?
Because Singaporeans created this horrible spirit in the first place.
Singaporeans are the willing collaborators who sold our souls in exchange for becoming a HDB flat millionaire.

  4. Recently one Asean PM was stupid enough to admit publicly he only looked for loyal Ministers but not smart ones to support his cabinet. To the man in the street, it is almost like he is admitting his cabinet is full of boot-lickers.

While over here, someone was stupid enough to admit that he still haven't found his heir apparent. Again to the man in the street, it is almost like saying none of the DPMs here is good enough to be the heir apparent. And speaking about an incompetent dose of government, is it not almost like what we are experiencing now ? Maybe it is meant for a specific purpose for selecting incompetent people here like there will be no need to sack the No. 2 later for challenging the No. 1 man. And maybe that is the real reason why they are paying million-dollar salaries, nothing to do with honest Ministers really ?

  5. I believe one PhD student did dig up some historical British colonial records. In fact, he is now a Doctor of Philosophy. But the Horrible person's son had implied that this PhD, son of Singapore, was willing to bullshit in order to earn his Doctorate!

  6. put some safeguards into the way in which people use their votes to bargain, to coerce, to push, to jostle and get what they want //

So what safeguards is he referring to here?
The GRCs? The GROS and CCC or PA? The presidents second key? The priority treatment for PAP voters? up the gerrymandering? the EBRC under its own charge?
