Dream Teams

Spiderman II is hitting the big screen this week. Everybody wants to be a superhero these days.

The Education Study Team (1979) that revamped the education system was first dubbed the "Daring Dozen". Detractors said they dared to show up for work at 8 am on the dot, and knock off at 5 pm sharp. Principals remember them for the fear they struck into their hearts by announcing themselves on the telephone as "Goh's men".

It appears the 2001 cohort of anointed political stars were christened the "Super Seven". The 4 that still remain are Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Khaw Boon Wan, Ng Eng Hen, and Vivian Balakhrishnan. 3 fell out of the constellation: Raymond Lim, Cedric Foo and Balaji Sadasivan.

The 2006 round-up groomed 3 more millionaire ministers, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew and Ministers in the Prime Minister's Office Grace Fu and S. Iswaran. "Tiresome Trio" comes to mind.

The new ensemble from 2011 comprise Tan Chuan-Jin (Manpower), Lawrence Wong (Culture, Community and Youth), Heng Swee Keat (Education), Chan Chun Sing (Social and Family Development) and Sim Ann (Minister of State for Education and Communications and Information). The freshly knighted "Fabulous Five" is expected to form the core of the People's Action Party's fourth generation leadership.

The youngest of the lot, at age 39, hails from the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD), which gave us the nefarious Population White Paper. Putting 6.9 million people on an island of 710 square kilometers is akin to loading the Sewol ferry with 3608 tons of cargo -  over three times more than the maximum recommended weight of 987 tons. But at least she doesn't declare open war on the "lunatic fringe" and call citizens names like "bigots". What did one newly minted minister just say? "Sometimes, I think we should just call a spade a spade. These actions by those who peddle hate are not acceptable, repulsive even."

    1. or all those fabulous, tiresome an super politicians can find citizens of another non-bigot country that's prepared to give them the mandate of heaven..

after all, which one is easier? booting out handful of politicians or mass exodus of citizens? i think the consensus world view is the bestest view lah..

  2. The power of words. "Cabinet reshuffle"? Promotion to the same Ministries, a re-shuffle? The rest of the bunch are not members of the Cabinet - confined only to full or acting Ministers. Didn't his sister boast of his superior vocabulary in one of her self- glorificatory compositions?

  3. Isn't that one of the oldest trick cunning politicians will use .... divide & rule? The 2 lao hero spanning across the Causeway has been using it to their advantage since memorial time.

Over there it's more between warring races or religions but here it's more between warring citizens & immigrants. Wait till one day these people unite and it will be doomsday for the Papigs. That is properly why for now the new immigrants & the old pioneers seems to get better treatment to up the stakes especially when they see more & more of the 'disgraceful bigots' in their eyes are flocking to opposition rallies.

There has got to be a reason for them to react the way they did. Looks like our PM must have already long forgotten he ever said sorry for nothing!

  4. If Singaporeans want to avoid a catastrophe liked the Sewol, they got to kick out the Crew in the Sin Cabinet. And if Sinkies do that, all the Reshuffle and Promotion of the Sin Crew will come to nought. When the Sin Captain is booted out before an impending catastrophe, it just means a blessing to the People.
The People have a golden opportunity waiting for them in the Coming General Election. So, let's see what the People choose.

  5. We must kick out the PM who overcrowded this little red dot with new immigrants without loyalty to the country. He is a "disgrace to Singapore" for bringing the country from 1st world to third world.

    1. Lyrics from the song "every breath you take" should be dedicated to the useless PM of Singapore.
      Every move you make
      Every vow you break
      Every smile you fake
      Every claim you stake
      I''ll be watching you.

Oh can you see... you''ve mess things up for me,
how my poor heart aches... with every step you take.

The PM is not wrong to empower and enrich himself and his members.

    3. “Yes, there was corruption. Yes, he gave favors to his family and his friends. But there was real growth and real progress,” - how Lee Kuan Yew justified Suharto's excesses at his death bed.

    4. He admires Suharto's guts. How he longs to be brave like Suharto. But coming from people who live in round houses....I mean whoi the hell wants to live in round houses? Red Indians? Eskimos?

  7. With one rare bird exception, all these seven heaven fab fives talk-cock trios hail from the civil service and ex-scholars. You want to nip the problem at its bud, sort out the chiak liao bee civil service and the idea of identifying your top leeders at the rip old age of 18. Unfortunately, neither the current 2 party system won't fix this problem, its the heart of elitism and why policies are geared towards the few insiders, and why fucks-ups are never their fault, from population to SMRT to healthcare to CPF. Its not a typical political problem, its elitism that you have to combat.

  10. The world is full of highly qualified people who make a career in serving your interests. They have no lack of support. Live in Sin, die in Sin

  11. I am not worried about people who peddled hate. They are usually simpleton and just plain blunt or honest.
It is those who peddle love I am worried about. Those are the people who get mass support and do the most harm...the irony
