Yes, She Really Did It

The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) gave ping pong paddler peddler Feng Tianwei the honour of being Singapore's flag bearer at last Friday's opening ceremonies at the London Olympic Stadium.

Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) President Lee Bee Wah gushed, "She is everything you want of a sporting ambassador."

Deputy Prime Minister and SNOC President Teo Chee Hean and President Tony Tan Keng Yam flew half way round the world, at taxpayers' expense of course, to be on hand to offer her personal congratulatory handshakes for the Bronze award. The $250,000 cheque, also sourced from same taxpayers, will follow after.

Then Feng had to throw her victory bouquet to her compatriots.

Before you gather in throngs and march with flaming torches and pitch forks to give her a warm welcome back to her generous host country, consider what might have happened if the wilting flowers had landed in the Singapore cheering section. She could have been fined for littering. Or charged with dropping killer litter. Play nice.

  1. This is something that upset Singaporeans seated at the stadium. Obviously, we may have thought she represent Singapore but I think her heart is still with China. This does not speak well of our integration program. Even in sport, FT do not feel at home. Perhaps LBW needs to explain to tax-payer why player under her charge displayed such disrespectful act in front of international audience. What a shame!

    1. I think you have mistaken, or overlooked an important fact. We have a world record breaker in Summer paralympics, true blue Singaporean Yip Pin Siu.

The only difference between Yip and Feng is that the former is competing in the 'disabled' game, while latter is in 'abled' game. Now some cynics will read much into it, and say some unkind words, but why don't we ask - where were the accolades and press attention or presidential congratulations to her? And btw, she won $100,000 for her gold.

FYI , a 17-year-old weightlifter who failed at each of her three attempts to lift the bar in London was labelled a "national disgrace" in at least two local china newspapers. The editors backed down and apologised only after social media websites lit up in support of the girl.

Here in SG, the press proudly said "FT is the way!" and all Ministers/Presidents are there to congratulate her, not mentioning some singaporeans too. I say we treat her just fine. Singaporeans are only asking if we as a nation should continue to buy and lure sports talents instead of grooming own. Or simply keep sports as a community bonding activity. These are very legit questions to ask.

  8. Just a sad fact of life. On our own, we're unlikely to produce any great sportsmen and sportswomen. There is no career future for such people in Singapore. Parents will not allow their kids to go for that path. Just have to resort to imports to achieve any medals.

The question here is why bother? Does this help Singapore a lot in the economic sense?

    1. This reflect badly on the ability of our country's leadership. The want sporting glory but do not know how to go about or unwilling to groom our local talents.

Why did out talents like Fandi play their football overseas for so long? Bcos he was told that he did not even have "O" levels and ask for so much money. What logic?

Now, if Singapore is prepared to pay a decent allowance for our local sports talent to train for their sports and then provide a path for future career in coaching or in the sports media, I believe, more athletes will be willing to do it on a full time basis.

If you only want to reward for results, then being a country with high cost and being pragmatic, Singaporeans will not choose this path. BTW, if you apply this same formula to pay our Ministers, there will also be no takers. There are lots of Singapore sports talents but not given the opportunity.

(And no, their press or leaders didn't label them xenophobes. In fact, it has unleased a blizzard of "jingoism".)

Not to be outdone, the Chinese clothes maker retorted "Get a grip! Pay attention to the performance of US atheles and NOT their clothes.

I believe all these built-up is the accumulation of frustration with government and its ministers for not managing the country well. Look at what happened lately, a small purchase of $50k bicycle and Minister KBW has to come out to defend then retract his statement. A doctor who violate traffic rule of getting someone to own up is such a small issue and Law Minister came up to tell people the charge is correct. Why do we pay so much for them to meddle with such trivial matters? What about traffic jams, high COE, costly housing, high medical fee, shortage of beds etc? I will rather they handle such national issues rather than kaypo on no impact issues. Are they too free? Go attend London Olympic lah.

Her style of play is a delight to watch and I hope she can win more medals in years to come. However, to be proud as a Singaporean because she won an Olympics medal is quite something else. I am not going to be delusional to believe she plays for Singapore as a country and not Singapore as a team. She is a professional athlete, she will play for any team that offers her the chance. One does not have to look far to know her plan after retirement. Check on Zhang Xueling and Li Li. Even her team mate, Singapore's most decorated sportswoman, Li Jiawei is preparing her retirement in Beijing. Three quarters Singaporeans are not blind to this fact. For those who wish to echo their pride and sing their praises, they are free to do so. For me, I just want to enjoy my games.
