It was obvious the hike for the non-graduate civil servants was not meant to address the shameful Gini coefficient. The management executive officers - specifically those who work on policies and oversea operations - who are benefiting from the 5 pay cent increase this month are, by one account, in the over $10,000 a month salary bracket. The beneficiaries of this largess include 6,500 management executive officers and 5,300 management support officers.

This unexpected generosity comes after the 5 to 12 percent increases announced for Home Team officers recently, and public sector nurses have been promised 5 to 20 percent over the next two years.

The Public Service Division (PSD) cited factors like economic growth, despite the published fact that GDP growth is nowhere within smelling range of  5 percent.

Based on advance estimates in July 2014, the Singapore economy grew by 2.1 per cent on a year-on-year basis in the second quarter of 2014, slower than the 4.7 per cent growth in the previous quarter. On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally-adjusted annualised basis, the economy contracted by 0.8 per cent, a reversal from the 1.6 per cent growth in the preceding quarter.

Another line used is the keep up with the Joneses in the private-sector argument. At least one dissenting voice shot this down, "I don't think civil servants are lagging behind the private sector." The CEO of the Center for Executive Education felt the PSD should "clearly articulate and provide the information on how extensive its private-sector salary data study was and what industry level it benchmarked salaries to."

The Home Team showed its true colours at Little India. The nurses' hard work are marred by horror stories of how a woman died because her aspirator was not switched on, and a grandma with an assigned ward and bed number who had to spend the night in a hospital corridor. Nobody really knows what the non-graduate civil servants do, since we assume policy making is in the powerful hands of the superscale permanent secretaries. However, we do see lots of helpers manning the balloting centers during a general election.

  1. Cost of living will definitely goes up, prices will go up, gst will go up. Wages for the low income will be stagnant to be more competitive lah. What a joke.

    1. I have not seen a REAL pay rise since more than 10 years ago. The best is wage adjustment equal or lower than inflation.

  2. Don't assume that the pay increase will = more votes. Non-grad also have brain, can think for their children's future.

  3. PM's sure way of fixing the opposition :

    ICs for New Citizens
+ Pay rises for civil servants
    + Pioneer Generation Scheme

How can PAP not win the next GE in its own cunning ways ?

  4. Sinkies will be abandoned like old pets that are straying around the Island once they age and fall below the productivity level expected.
BUT, most can see the Pioneer Generation smiling like sunflowers on receiving letter of the Package. Wonder if they are under the impression that the hospitals are as good as hotel. And they need pay only a little to enjoy staying there.

Election will be called soon and PAP could very well increase its winning margin.

Daft Sinkies deserve the Government they chose for themselves.

  5. What we will likely not see for a long time from Honour (Singapore):

    - We will honour our promise to return CPF money to you in full when you are 55 years old.
    - We will honour the Singapore Pledge and not treat it like an aspiration.

  7. Saw a group of elderlies women talking happily about receiving their Pioneer Generation Package Letters.
It seems liked they had received vouchers to stay at 5 star hotel for free or had struck jackpot.
    Truly naive old folks.

    1. These are the Singaporeans that PAP wants.
      - the real Singaporean elite have been emigrating in huge numbers since 1965
      - the elite that now resides in Singapore are just PAP elites

And PAP elites just want digits to run the country
      - they don't really want your children to be university graduates and end up challenging PAP elites for glory like WP's Chen Show Mao

    2. And yes;
It's in PAP's best self interest for all unhappy Singaporeans (anti PAP voters) to please leave the country.
They are running a company called Singapore Inc.
They want party loyalty ahead of loyalty to Singapore and Singaporeans.

    3. They make a song and dance (figuratively and literally with gongs, bells and cymbals) in distributing the Pioneer Generation package, which actually covers their arse in the healthcare needs of the oldies. Big deal. To the more enlightened, just take it and VTO! Ditto for the pay increases. After they get your votes, it will be back to square one. Semula.

    4. In most other countries, taking care of the general population especially the seniors is the responsilibity of the respective govt.
Here when additional benefits are give to a selected group, the make a song and dance about it over the media that its becoming nauseating.
Even my 85 mum knows its an election carrot because before the lost so many seats, they couldn't care a hoot about how people cope
