One More For The Road Ahead

Vying for the last blooper of the year - the other contender being the Downtown Line - the spanking new Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) won hands-down.

The breakdown of the new Downtown Line (DTL) on Friday 27 Dec was the second time DTL services have been disrupted since its official opening on 21 December 2013 by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Purchased at a cost of $570 million the 73 DTL train sets were manufactured in Changchun, Jilin province, China. Operator SBS Transit is blaming a little girl for activating the detrainment door device and grinding the multimillion dollar system to a halt. They refused to release the incriminating CCTV footage, guarding it like a national security secret. They did admit that "the internal laminate of the metal cover which holds the detrainment door switch had debonded." Shoddy workmanship or quality assurance aside, the chap who signed off the acceptance inspection deserves the sack.

Thousands of motor vehicles were stuck in a 2-hour traffic snarl along the $4.3 billion MCE on the second day of operation yesterday. Reputedly the worst congestion was at the exit to Central Boulevard where the 10-lane superhighway turns into a 2-lane slip road.  LTA says it will "immediately" convert that stretch from 2- to 4-lanes, something that obviously did not cross their minds during the many months of road traffic planning. In this instance, LTA lays blame on the motorists for not being familiar with the new road configuration. Worse is to come. "If the traffic condition today was already so bad when half the working population in the Marina area is away on holiday, I think there will be chaos on Jan 2," dreaded one affected citizen. You don't even want to contemplate the horrors ahead when the population hits 6.9 million.

  1. These planning failures are endemic with these super expensive talents. They are too pre-occupied with making money. It would appear that the MCE was planned with a view to " freeing" that part of Marina reclaimed land for development rather than to solve a traffic problem as pointed out by the TRE. And presumably the China made trains are "cost-effective". You do not have to be a rocket scientist to know that an emergency device should not be so easily or accidentally tripped. It has to be intentionally activated. And it should not be placed where a small child can reach it. Expensive bloopers indeed.

  2. Think the motorist should SUE the LTA...for the additional costs incurred, the "stress' induced by the jams..etc

Any lawyers willing to take the case, except for M Ravi, who might be too busy to handle...Lawyers like CSM / SL / and "Big Mouth" PS, could they be interested, or they have become the NEW ELITES...

  3. At S$2 billion per lane, our genius planners are so smart. The new Most-Congested-Expressway will soon see some serious ERPs up to ease the traffic 'caused by insatiable demands' of car users lah...where got incompetence?! Come, we should clap for them. $74 for a 1.45hrs of taxi fare is unheard of. Some more paid $8 for extra booking fee...so tok gong sia!
    6.9m, huat arhhhh

  5. When are we going to get rid of those overpaid idiots who planned this?

    1. The overpaid idiots usually outsource these dirty work to contract staffs which are usually bochap due to the facts that they are only employed till the projects ends, since the fall guy (usually the contract staff) cannot speak for themselves (contract ended) the overpaid idiots can pin all the blames to the contract staff. If you think it sounds familiar, it maybe due to the ministers (hatchman) applying the recommendation of a community and pin the blame on them if somehow it turns weary.

  6. With many credit companies sprouting up all over Singapore. Many foreigners workers 1.5 millions foreign workers paid us $750 millions per month levies and the huge fund from the CPF locked up schemes for life?

We need to optimised these huge amount of indirect taxes and get better returns from it and which might pay us 9 or 10 months of bonuses, previous record is 8 months? Don't forget we has to pay ourselves the the highest salaries in the world too?

We can set up credit companies, to lend to those out of jobs and need money, since now after 55 they can't take out the CPF, and lot of cheaper foreign workers take away or depressed the new citizens and local jobs, don't forget we targeted 6.9 millions populations, so it is likely more new citizens will come to takeaway the older new citizens jobs and local old citizens jobs?

So now these old citizens now can't get back their CPF at 55 and the lost their jobs to newer and newer citizens or cheaper citizens and their pay depressed with more imported new citizens and higher inflation?

And they can't get job loss benefits like the Nordic, because we need be thrifty with social welfare, to pay ourselves the most expensive salaries in the world? The solutions is to set up a credit companies to lend money to this persons who is out of jobs, no money, no savings, no CPF to tide over their difficult periods?

We can assist these group of people who lost their jobs to cheaper foreigners, last time we use the words locals or newer citizens lost their jobs to cheaper foreigners we call it foreign worker (Creat Value )for Singapore workers because we can collect huge amount of levies from them and depress the local workers pay maybe later take away their jobs?

Now we need to use nice sound word call (Social Funding Grants), then claim credit for it, which mean the job loss workers can borrow a bit cheaper from us then the banks, credit companies and loan sharks which make them a run for their money?

We have lots of money many billions from the levies, COE, GST, ERP, CPF locked schemes for life, no problems we can loan to the job lost workers a bit cheaper then other companies and claim credits and ask the medias to broadcast how our schemes benefited them, maybe later we can get more bonuses 9 or 10 months?

In these was the workers feel we solve their problems and the might votes for us? What do you think?

  7. BREAK-NECK NEWS:

Lousy Transport Authority (LTA) has announced that the heavy traffic at Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) is not traffic jam, but "scheduled traffic".

LTA chief engineer, Shui Pian Plan told our reporter: "We never anyhow plan ok? It is obvious that intricate planning by the greatest minds has been done when we converted a relatively straight ECP into a massively curved MCE. What can I say, I am a genius!"

At press time, local movie house, Golden Villager, has expressed interest in partnering LTA to screen movies in MCE given that the average "scheduled traffic" last as long as a full movie. Lucky movie-goers who happens to be "scheduled" to spend a longer time in MCE may even get to watch the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy in one go.

Billion of dollars well spent indeed!

  9. Don't forget we have the highest salaries in the world, 10 times the the amount the Nordic ministers salaries?

We can't be complacent, we got to get the message across every corner if we can find schemes that make money we got to find it and do it?

2016 with more new citizens and with the lost of Punggol East by elections, we need to be on our toe, now they are going door to door to counter our media advantages?

We need more funding for the profit sharing schemes, more new foreigners to fund the schemes to win more votes? Remember the white paper and the target of 6.9 millions people to fund our schemes and campaigns?

We need more money for the higher populations and give more profit sharing schemes. to convince more of them to vote for us?

  10. Obviously they knew that exit road to Rochor is busy even at non-peak periods. Yet the planners did not plan adequately to cater for anticipated traffic flow. How can motorists be unfamiliar when it is supposed to be a direct exit from either direction ?

Obviously they were eyeing for those land parcels occupied by the roads to be eventually auction off to the highest bidder and they are even prepared to build the costliest tunnel just for that.

Now they have make it worse. Looks like the only solution available is that they either new ERP gantries, new operating hours or impose additional ERP charges because they will now say traffic flow is below optimum. They will never admit it is their mistake afterall.

Talking about greediness (think more bonuses) and yet has a particular reason to be greedy. They really are brilliant aren't they, those greedy buggers ?

  11. In Today, Eugene Tan wrote about the Little India riots and immigration policy:

"...Are the benefits of such a policy largely privatised while the costs socialised? At another level, are we as a society prepared to shoulder more of the costs?"

It is applicable here too. Benefits for developers, bankers and deal makers ... the citizens bear all the inconveniences.

Its such a wonderful start to 2014... and we have just 2 years to wait for the GE. Meanwhile, I look forward to more hiccups.. slowly, the nails are driven one by one. It is a good feeling.

  12. So the Lim Ah Heng and the Zoro King and now people used to call him the tooth pick master.

Last time the Heng Heng Heng, got a very good suggestion the innovative approach in locking up people CPF for life, he do such a got job give the right excuses and convincing people crying, later promoted to chairman, show some of them cheated all their money in Batam and crying to get some pity votes, later was promoted to Chairman?

So next time we need volunteer to cry and standby, we got to ask some mediacorp professional artistes to advice them the next time and make it more convincing, because this time it will be more challenging, with the unexpected lost of Punggol East the voters are getting wiser and wiser by the days?

And the oppositions able to counter our medias advantage by knocking door to door, to reach out to everyone and talking to the new citizens, now is fifty fifty chance not like last time the ministers with high votes and distribute some votes to the new candidates and bring them in by the back doors, if they can't came in my the front doors?

We got to be more professional in our crying, so we need to engage the media professionals to train us and standby a few ministers to cry during the 2016 if need arise?

So we had decided on our theme or manifestos in 2016 (How to make nothing but money from the foreigners) as now the GRC system don't work? and the profit sharing schemes or incentives schemes don't work in the Punggol East and the Presidential Elections?

So now we depend very much on the foreigners to vote us in and pull us through this difficult period?

  14. So let's see what new mess this PAP gahmen has created:

We got AYE, ECP and KPE.
    Three expressways.
All converging into the 4.2km MCE.
Located in the middle of the busy Marina Bay Financial Centre.

And of course Lee Hsien Loong's PAP gahmen was unprepared for a massive traffic jam that cost $4.3 billion dollars to engineer?

    ReplyDelete
  15. The solution is to put up more ERP gantries to moderate traffic and alleviate the jam. I bet this will be the group think and I shudder to think how those senior civil servants used taxpayers money for such Ill thought projects. Have we been over paying these people?

    ReplyDelete
  16. For once I feel glad I don't have money to renew my COE! Those drivers using the MCE to go work at Shenton Way obviously are the PAP's biggest supporters, who else could afford $500 a parking lot in the CBD? It might be useful for the elites, while being stuck for an hour in their topless Lotuses and SLKs and whatnot, to maybe think about the saying: what goes around comes around. Vote close to your pockets, you are also voting for lucky idiots just like yourselves. Anyway, advance GDP have been decreed and GDP bonuses have been distributed, and the ministers are obviously on year-end getaway somewhere in the Caribbean or skiing in the French Alps, so you elites still stuck in the MCE, learn to loosen up and enjoy your jams hor .... 2016 huat arghhh.

  21. Come to think of it, the whole stretch of AYE-ECP expressways was not too bad as they shorten travelling time. If they are not so greedy, they could have upgraded the original stretch and just reclaimed the land over the MCE to sell to developers.

All the billions spent on the new MCE ended up with a big headache of massive jams at Rochor exit ! So this is the kind of top talent that they say it is worth paying for ! So who has been bluffing us all this while ?

  23. It boggles the mind to think the amount already spent on all these, and counting; and yet when it comes to spending on welfare, the usual retort is: where is the money, we will have to increase the taxes. So in the end, is it worth it to throw away all these billions, to prepare the way for the 6.9 million or more?

This is what the Khaw said: "More population, but quality of life remains the same or even better?” “Actually, the answer is yes,” he emphasised. “It’s possible.” He said that two conditions must be in place to make this possible: good, long-term planning, and good infrastructure built ahead of time. Government planners, he said, are using the mantra “prepare for the worst, but and hope for the best.”

Mr Khaw likened this effort to throwing a wedding banquet. When one invites 1,000 guests, one must cater for all 1,000, he said, even if they have not RSVPed and perhaps only 600 or 700 ultimately turn up.

Sure it's possible, anything is possible. You can squeeze more people into shoe-box units, or underground, which is happening now; this will not affect the quality of life of the elites, but will line their pockets. It appears the Much Congested Expressway invited 1,000 guests, but 2,000 turned up. We import everything, food, water, energy - they are playing with fire when they plan for the 6.9 million. When you play god, nature, or other forces, has a way of coming back and biting you in your asses.

Isn't that by itself already a drop in the quality of living? I suppose this is our equivalent Swiss standard of living as promised? Do you think GCT is now bothered by what he had promised as PM or will he give a damn either?
