Something Is Wrong With William

"Something has gone wrong with us Singaporeans." Why would the general secretary of the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) William Wan (‘Where has all our empathy gone?’, Shitty Times, Friday 24 Jan) write something like that?

There was once a William Wan (WW) who preached from the pulpit, spouting stories from the bible like the Book of Numbers tale when God was angry with his people for commingling with the Moabite foreigners - specifically "played the harlot with the daughters of Moab" (Numbers 25:1, RSV). Phinehas, son of a priest, followed Zimri the Israeli and his Midianite wife home, and pierced a spear through both of them. God then said, "Phinehas the son of Eleazor, son of Aaron the priest, has turned back my wrath from the people of Israel." This verse has been oft quoted by the Ku Klux Klan to justify their xenophobic attitudes and practices.

No effigies please, we're Singaporeans
Singaporeans would never go that far to avenge an insult. At worst they could subcontract the sticky task to the Ah Longs, to superglue the door locks of the racist's condominium or spray paint his precious Porsche, as Michael Fay would do.

Why would this William side with a foreign trash who taught his precocious 5-year-old to mock an ethnic group with the offensive buck-teeth and slope-eyes gesture? The offspring of copulating with a Miss Singapore? Talk about Singaporeans being screwed! And the greatest crime of this wuss of a wealth manager has to be depriving us of a rare COE. The car population is limited to 0.3 per cent growth, while the immigrant population is allowed to gallop at double digits. Way before the advent of the Year of the Horse.

Even a Shanmuganm called his apology a sham, "But some feel that the manner of his apology showed a lack of sincerity. And I think there is some basis for thinking that." That's a lawyer talking.

One clue for betting on the wrong horse - the patron of SKM is Lee Hsien Loong and its adviser is Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, both avowed admirers of all things foreign. Casinos, F-1 races, Swiss Bank Accounts, you name it.

When William wrote, "in a civilised society, one need not gloat at the fallen," he was this close to plagiarising Tommy Koh: "In advanced democracies, when an election is over, the vanquished will have the grace to congratulate the victor and the victor will have the magnanimity to forgive his opponent for all the unkind things that the opponent has said." Except that the barbs here were targeted at the father who raised the son who worships foreigners. With quips like "their (foreign workers) crime rates are, in fact, lower than Singaporeans in general.”

For all the high falutin talk about empathy, SKM's Wan should take serious look at why, after a Singaporean student was already issued a notice of offence for charging her phone at an unlocked MRT station power socket, the LTA should follow with legal action to haul her up in court. Something is seriously wrong with William.

    5. If it's us ordinary Singaporeans, the law comes down on us hard, no excuses, no forgiveness, no chances, no mistakes allowed.

But when it involves them - the elites and their pet foreign talents - they are all forgiving, all magnanimous, all ready to give second, heck multiple chances.

39% of Singaporeans have already repudiated this nonsense. As time goes by, hopefully even more will wake up to this double standard.

  3. Is the Singapore Kindness Movement kind to Singaporeans?
Or is it kind to Foreigners and Millionaires only?

Can a PAP Millionaire ever be on the side of an unwashed poor Singaporean?

If the Millionaires do not want to be on our side.
Why does 60% of Singaporeans still want to be on their side?

  4. Sir, they are the same WILLIAM WAN. Have met him over the years in various capacities, including his current position.
Got one of his autographed books too - he gives them freely to promote himself.

William Wan's Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM) is to encourage Singaporeans to be kind to Millionaires and Foreigners.
SKM is not about promoting kindness to poor, unwashed Singaporeans (including students).

  6. Empathy is reserved for victim. I emphathise with the girl who was fined for charging her phone. I see her as a victim of SMRT's poor customer service record.

  7. Suppose that the patron of SKM is Chee Soon Juan and its advisor Low Thia Kiang. What would the government's reaction be? The election campaign for 2016 has begun. Co-opting willing entities like SKM and other "personalities" is the name of the game. The powers that be seem to be unable to realise that the uproar over Anton has its roots in the dissatisfaction and disgust at its immigration policies and other acts seen as screwing up the locals. They will pay the price comes 2016. The plan to divert attention and give a feel good factor by having a full year of celebrations in 2015 will boomerang on them.

  9. I don't care if he is William 1, William 2 or he could call himself William 3. He might as well quote the Holy Bible, Proverbs 24:17,18 "Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth , and let not thine heart be glad when he stumbleth : Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him".

  10. He is actually leading a Singaporean Kindness (to Foreigners) Movement.

The foreigners showed him the middle finger and he smiled in return, because he still got his millions. Never mind about Singaporean pride being trampled.

It is no surprise that our young say they don't feel proud of the country.

  16. Poor Anton. Now that he has to wash that stench of economy class transport off him once he landed in Perth. That must have been hard on him. Was his private jet send for servicing too? Hope he reunite with his baby soon. But more importantly, he should seriously keep his residency there because he ain't going to be able to eat lunch in this town again.

  17. Where is William Wan when the poor and disadvantaged people need help? In this "you-die-your-business" country, there is no social safety net for the weak, the sick, the old, and the unemployed. One former ambassador to the U.N. even claimed there were no homeless people in Singapore! So where is the kindness of this regime, Mr Wan?

  18. It does get "curiouser and curiouser" in lala land doesn't it?

But there is method to all the absurdities we wirness daily. Wan and his patrons live in an elitist world where only money matters, so their moral compasses' true north point only to their pockets. For them, its perfectly logical that 90% of the population travelling on "stench smelling" be forced to accept fare increases which has "nothing to do the SMRT/SBS' efficiency". Yet in the next column in the ST you will read Sim Ann telling SMEs to get more productive and workers' salaries can only go up if we become more productive. No contradiction there, lets move on.

So either papigs carry a gun pointed backwards, or Wan is truly just agreeing and sharing Anton Caseys' "get off my elitist face" world view.

  19. Responding to the student's $400 fine, all the heartless LTA said was "She pleaded guilty and was fined by the court." Is this what the "Singapore Kindness Movement" is all about? William Wan should be made to answer this question.

  21. William Wan should review the actions of the CCC advisors who withhold approval of projects in opposition wards.

Kindness begins at home. Anton can look after himself... and he has, by skipping town.

  22. Were our PAP leaders, past & present, ever kind to its critics and the opposition members ?

William should start his campaign especially those leaders with such a cruel past history of jailing people without giving them a fair trial including our PRC bus drivers

Look at those caught during the Little India Riot, did these people give us their two cents worth of time, advice and big hearts toward those implicated. NO! They were simply deported. Why is that?
