Oscar Fever

Animator Nickson Fong won Singapore's first Academy Award for his "Pose Space Deformation" technique which was used in "Avatar". The Technical Achievement Award was for his creation that makes 3-D animated characters more life-like, and has been widely adapted in the film industry. It's not the Oscar, but the innovation will be honoured  at the Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards in Hollywood.

For a shot at the real Oscar, the following script writing, in the fantasy category, deserves top mention:

  1. I guess if we all join PAP and become Millionaire Ministers, we can break the cycle of poverty.
But how many can become Millionaire Ministers?

How many Millionaire Ministers can Singapore afford?

Where is the money going to come from?
(Singaporean bank accounts & hard work?)

Where is the money going to?
    ($2 companies?)

  2. When the income gap becomes too wide, meritocracy is going to help the lucky few with the vast majority permanently stuck in the rut. Dr Koh is the lucky few. This current system remains broke and will remain so if Dr Koh gets elected.

  3. I am poor too...1/19/2013 12:46 PM

Genuine people who have not so stellar backgrounds are usually less likely to harp about it.

What is being done here is shoving it down the throat... and we know where it will end up.

  4. The point about Dr Koh's story is not that the PAP system has done well on the social mobility front, quite the contrary. Forty years ago, I assure your young readers that many of us have fared worst than sharing one kuning fish a day during childhood, but because we are not elites so no chance to stick 8 microphones around our necks to hear our battle scars. The real take away is that if today a child were to grow up in such a family, the PAP system guarantees that he or she has zero chance of finishing secondary five, let alone become a doctor.

  5. If that kind of simple lifestyle is to be cherished, is he not making a fool of the father & son team asking to be paid in millions ? It is as if he is now giving them a tight slap on their faces, why do they need millions when Ikan kuning + porridge shall suffice?

  6. Everytime someone from PAP praised a "system has been put in place" to help the poor makes me cringed. This was often repeated many times in and outside parliament. I cannot believe Dr Koh is making it sound like something new to him which he will impose on the govt whom he eventually reported to? Can he come out with something more refreshing to the ears of the voters? I am tired of hearing PAP broken records everytime they panic.

  7. My grandma says ikan kuning is much bigger than the ikan bilis she had to eat during her time. Is this another mee siam mai hum boo-boo?

  8. I thought I heard it all with the $8 heart surgery. Now we hear the kuning and porridge story. Sob sob. Khaw, where are you? Dr Chopsticks has come up with a bigger whopper than you. The MIWs certainly are good spinners of yarns.

No disrepect to the Teochews (wa ma si), but a common saying is "teo chew nang, ka chng ang ang". And the red arse is not the result of a probe by a colorectal doctor. LOL.

  9. "Two Singapore-based animation companies have closed down in recent days.

Egg Story Creative Production announced its demise and the redundancy of some 30 staff in the week before Christmas. That was followed by the announcement that a rescue attempt at Storm Lion, which had dismissed most of its staff earlier in the year, had finally proved fruitless.

Launched in 2005 by Nickson Fong (pictured) an animator with credits on Hollywood pictures including Shrek, Starship Troopers, Godzilla, Stuart Little, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, Egg Story was working on two productions."

Just because singapore govt want media hub does not mean it will be success, it will be the same as sport hub. Those interest and culture must suit the environment.

You mean PAP government is not God?
You mean it requires more than just throwing money at a problem to make it work?

You mean just because Limpeh says "Hub", it will not automatically become Hub?

  10. If lawyers can lie, doctors can also lie. This is the dark side of meritocracy - everyone has to lie to make a better living.

  15. a kuning is really small n mixed with porridge - really enough for a family of 7 and at that time( 1980's ?) i don't think singapore is really that poor !!! too exaggerated !!! if what he say is true, then singapore in the 80's must be still really underdeveloped, poor developing nation !!!! if he said that in the 1960's to the 70's i believe, not in the early 80's.
