Toilet Tales

Chairman of the Foundation of Rotary Clubs, David Tong, has boldly stepped forward to clarify that its constitution bans members from taking part in any political activity in the name of the clubs. He was probably responding to former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bok's Facebook posting, questioning the $100,000 offer to support PAP candidate Desmond Choo's scheme to upgrade old toilets in Hougang. Tan had commented the cause was noble, "However the reason and timing for the donation is misplaced."

Note the letter of offer was dated 22nd May 2012, at the height of the epic Battle for Hougang. Choo's campaign team said 50 more toilets can be retrofitted with the extra money, on top of the 11 already upgraded, and 19 in the pipeline. The letter is addressed specifically to "Dear Mr. Desmond Choo Pey Ching, Hougang", and yet we are told Tapan Kumar Rao had not even met Choo before - how many strangers know him as Pey Ching? The last line reads emphatically, "I am sure, together we can make a difference." He must have crossed out "Always Here For You," that would be too obvious.

Acting like the saint he is obviously not, Tapan Rao maintains "the political dimension had not crossed his mind" when he penned the missive with a grandiose stroke of generosity. Now he wants to make it crystal clear that "the Rotary Club is not making any donation to any political party." Which happens to be quite true, since the letter spells out clearly that the "Rotary Club of Singapore will be happy to work with you and your team" to "raise funds necessary to retrofit toilets." If Desmond had expected a fat check for $100K to land on his desk ("Choo's toilet upgrade project gets $100,000 donation", ST Breaking News, 24 May 2012), he will be in for another rude surprise. Coming so soon right after his dashed hopes of May 26th, that should be enough make a grown man cry.

Tan demanded to know, "Now that PAP Desmond lost to WP Png in the election, what is the Rotary Stand?" Sorry, Mr Former Presidential Candidate, the offer was good only for "work with you and your team", as in Desmond, not Png. As an ex-PAP backbencher, surely he knows how the game is played.

  3. Huh, so much for not following the American style of politics i.e. lobbying, seems pretty close to that though.

  5. Perhaps the Rotary can live up to their motto "Service Above Self" by lobbying the PAP government to finally upgrade Hougang. Did they mention that they had been doing this for the people in the last 82 years?!

  6. Its sad to note that these people still take Singaporeans as idiots. Don't we all know this is a [lot to increase DC's votes at the most crucial time of the campaign? Even school children will know its a wayang tactic. Rotary Club has lots to explain to its members and the public at large. Is it really apolitical? Come on! Be clean and truthful.

  7. Now that picture alone truly tells us how saintly they can be !

Only to have the Shitty Times reported today how this same DPM condemned the freedom of the press in UK for being controlled by those with vested interests ?

Hey, are you not shooting your own leg ? Does this man have more brawns than brains in his head ? So is this how far fetched the intelligence of our Ministers can be ?

And talking about integrity, can you honestly come clean to us the hard truth as to who the responsible person was who made that horrible decision to have Mr. Brown sacked over a mere article about rising costs ?

It also make you wonder if singapore rotary club goes by the earlier motto:
"One profits most who serves best" => Surely one profit most if serve the best interest of ruling party. Anyone agree please Kee Chiu

"Rotary's primary motto is "Service above Self"; an earlier motto, "One profits most who serves best"."

  13. If Rotary Clubs were really sincere to help the needy, they could do it during non-election time or do it quietly. Why need the publicity? Must bang your drums to show you are caring meh? So lame. Now DC lose. Double lame.

    1. Why only give free porridge and hearing aids for Hougang? Just lower or exempt gst for daily necessities to benefit all singaporeans lah. Let foreigners pay gst since they are invited by pappy to come.

  15. Mr Tapan Kumar Rao did a very stupid thing involving the Rotary clubs which have many kind spirited members.
PAP had very little chance to win Hougang, but was given a super opportunity to show its sincerity, and to prove to the voters of Singapore that it can redeem itself, but the many apple polishers did not give PAP this opportunity.
    It was a missing opportunity.

  16. "Mr Tapan Kumar Rao did a very stupid thing involving the Rotary clubs which have many kind spirited mem bers."

The stupid stunt of Tapan now result in Rotary club deeply despised and having bad reputation of collaborating with PAP politically. It look like it is now become a club where the rich and famous join because they want to profit more by working with PAP. Nevermind if these are true or not, Tapan has himself to blame for creating such perception.

People should stop donating to such organization for its political association with ruling party.
